The advent of 24 hour television and greater accessibility to the internet has ushered in an era of information, data and opinion overdose. A click of the mouse or flexing of the finger muscles to switch on the 'Idiot Box' is enough to be bombarded with sights and sounds that are often overwhelming. Caught in the crossfire from all directions by opinions, counter opinions, breaking news (quite often even before the event has even taken place),social networking and micro blogging sites making talk and opinionating cheaper than ever before, the loss of a culture where socializing has given way to networking, where consciously constructed online profiles are often the sole binding factors between people, where the intimacy and warmth of gorging one's eyes on the morning newspaper has given vent to cold, hard bits and bytes of an afternoon internet update and where the comforting immediacy of experiencing life as one lives through it has been substituted by having to view and access every single emotion and feeling through the prism of a visual and an aural media that plays its cards psychologically; how then to sift through this overdose of information that one has to process and stay on top of, how to separate the grain from the chaff and how to arrive at an opinion authentically in an intellectual culture where all notions of originality face constant threat?

It is our endeavor to be a facilitator in an attempt to encourage critical thinking, to initiate the uninitiated into the vista of engaging with the immediate social, political and economic environment and arriving at plausible explanations that explain phenomena that one encounters, to encourage appreciation of the subjectivity of all experiences and opinions and to cultivate a scientific temper. Our aim is to develop a culture in our college that influences all in a fundamental way, give us basic faith in an all-inclusive, multanimous, free-thinking culture, help shape our minds and define our sense of ourselves in relation to the world, and so, inevitably, influence what we do later in life. Too many Indian colleges are places for lectures, rote-learning, memorizing, regurgitation; we wish our endeavor here will be a tiny step in encouraging random reading, individual note-taking, personal tutorials, extra-curricular development, better articulation, widening of horizons and development of spirit of enquiry.

So far we have learned to answer the questions, let us now try to question the answers. Some of us can go even further, and question the questions.

The 1st Round, Group Discussion shall take about 3 hours.

2nd Round Spin a Yarn should also take about 2 hours.

Rules of Regulations for the Event

We propose to have a three stage format of public speaking, each stage challenging the participant to dive into reservoirs of untapped potential and skill. We earnestly believe that a debate has to be pursued with the intent of
progress and not merely victory.

1st Round – Group Discussion

This round shall test the participants' abilities to engage with a group of diverse individuals, to contribute ideas, opinions and solutions to a given problem, to constructively carry the group forward in terms of progress towards addressing the given problem and also to facilitate debate and the crossfire of ideas.
In this round we shall divide the participants into groups of suitable sizes, depending on the overall number of participants, ensuring diversity in the academic background of the participants in individual groups. Top speakers from each group shall move onto the next round.

2nd Round – Spin a Yarn

Man turned to myths to explain his everyday world, for a rational simplified explanation, something within the grasp of comprehension. From the world is flat to the earth being the center of everything to the tradition of the dragon gorging on the sun, myth-making has been as old as mankind himself.
This round shall test the participants' abilities to create plausible worlds around seemingly irrational and absurd scenarios. It shall test the ability to create a fully realized environment and a world around statements that shall be provided to the participants on the spot. Top 6 speakers from this round shall progress onto the finale.

3rd Round – Parliamentary Debate

The top six speakers shall be divided into teams of three each. Then they will face off in a parliamentary debate that shall be the ultimate test of their abilities to critically analyze a problem, to interpret the problem statement, to expose chinks in the logic and rationale behind the opposition team's arguments and to finally formulate a sophisticated model that shall offer multi-dimensional solution to the problem at hand.
A group of impartial judges shall adjudicate the event and award prizes to the top three individual speakers and also a team prize to the winners of the finale, shall also be presented.
