Outreach Activity - 25th October 2008

The student members of SPIE DCE visited a government School in a nearby Locality, Rohini to help popularize optics in the School. The school students were very enthusiastic, making intelligent observations and asking many questions. The Members of SPIE discussed, among other things, the various aspects of life in College and also the importance of physics and optics in particular. They also gave them many examples of job prospects in the field.

The SPIE members also donated NEMO kits to the physics laboratory of the schools so that the students are able to witness the phenomena that they study in text books.
Photonic crystals are composed of periodic dielectric or metallo-dielectric nanostructures that affect the propagation of electromagnetic waves (EM) in the same way as the periodic potential in a semiconductor crystal affects the electron motion by defining allowed and forbidden electronic energy bands. Essentially, photonic crystals contain regularly repeating internal regions of high and low dielectric constant.
