Outreach Activity - 31st October 2008

Another school was visited by the student members, this time it was a government school in Mangol Puri. The school students had completed ray optics and were able to follow the instructions without much difficulty. They were in awe when some of the NEMO kit experiments were demonstrated to them, and were very excited when NEMO kits were donated to their school's physics lab, to help further their knowledge and interest in the subject.

Photonic crystals are composed of periodic dielectric or metallo-dielectric nanostructures that affect the propagation of electromagnetic waves (EM) in the same way as the periodic potential in a semiconductor crystal affects the electron motion by defining allowed and forbidden electronic energy bands. Essentially, photonic crystals contain regularly repeating internal regions of high and low dielectric constant.
