Brief Profile Summary

Dr. Vijay Gautam is Professor in Department of Mechanical Engineering, DTU, Delhi since 27th December 2016. He graduated from Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi University (presently Delhi Technological University) in 1995 and did his post graduation in Manufacturing Engineering from National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (NIFFT), Ranchi University in 1998. He completed his Ph.D. on the topic "Investigations on Springback in V-Bending of Tailor Welded Blanks" under the expert guidance of Prof. D. Ravi Kumar, from Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi in Dec 2016.

He has more than 23 years of teaching experience in the field of Manufacturing Processes, Mechanics of Solids, Machine Design, Design of Machine Elements, Design of Automobile Components, Metallurgy, Foundry Technology and Plasticity and Metal Forming. He has been teaching these subjects at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. His research areas are focussed in the field of Metal Forming, Machine Design and Design of Automotive Components and Composite laminates and material characterization. He has guided many under-graduate and graduate students for various projects. He has published his research work in 23 international journals and 40 International and National conferences.

He has also served DTU as a member secretary to Department Research Committee (DRC) and Director to the centre for competitive examinations (CCE) since Nov. 2018 which is a centralised facility in DTU for various examinations of UPSC, IES, IAS, allied services, GATE for Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) etc. He was Faculty Advisor to SAE-Delhi DTU Chapter and a member of SAE (Society for Automotive Engineers). He had been faculty advisor to team MINI BAJA for five consecutive years and the team participated in many events in India and abroad and won many awards and laurels till 2018.

An Overview of Metal Forming Lab

The Metal forming lab is designed and developed to teach basic techniques for shaping metal sheets utilizing stretch forming, stamping, and drawing processes and other bulk deformation processes like wire drawing etc. Hands-on work with equipment such as presses and dies, with an emphasis on safety regulations and tool use. The lab also focuses on material characteristics, formability characterization studies based on process parameters, and quality control to assure precision and reduce faults. The lab combines practical applications with troubleshooting skills to prepare students for real-world manufacturing difficulties.

Key Research Areas

  • Warm and cold sheet metal forming: formability characterization of lightweight 2-ply, 3-ply composite laminate sheet, aluminium alloy sheets, FSW sheets, IF, TRIP and High C-Mn steel sheets.
  • Material Properties and Behaviour: Determination of mechanical properties and plastic deformation of various materials that affect formability.
  • Bulk material deformation: Wire drawing, Forging, Tube drawing, Rolling etc
  • Tooling and Die Design: Design, development and performance of tooling and dies used in forming processes.
  • Defect Detection and Prevention: Causes and remedies of defects; and mitigating defects such as fracture, wrinkling, tearing, distortion, warping etc.
  • Simulation and Modelling: FE methods to predict material behaviour, process outcomes, and optimize forming techniques.
