The Delhi College of Engg.,(DCE) UAV has won the “Most Innovative Design Award” for their unconventional quad-rotor UAV at the Grand International Aerial Robotics Competition organized by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), in association with the US army. The competition was held at the Fort Benning, US Army Base in Georgia, USA. The Aerial robots which participated in the US competition were expected to perform a mission that is beyond the capability of any system in existence today, including those of the Super Power’s military machines. Nothing in the U.S. arsenal of robots is currently capable of completing the IARC mission to fly in 3 km, find a village, identify a specific building within that village, identify all actual openings in that building, fly in or send in a sub robot to the building through one of those openings, search the interior for a specific target, and transmit or relay still or video pictures of the target back to the launch point 3 km distant-- all completely without human intervention. Among the 24 teams from USA and Canada, Delhi College of Engg team was the only team from India to compete with the student teams from the world top ranking universities such as California State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Purdue University, University of Central Florida, Virginia Polytechnic institute and state university, Waterloo University Canada. The Delhi College of Engg UAV team has won high admiration of the organizers for their highly innovative design and for the exceptional team excellence demonstrated by the talented students. The Delhi College of Engg UAV comprises of twin UAVs, one large primary UAV and another miniature UAV, which initially sits on the large vehicle and later takes off from the orbiting mother UAV after a chosen target has been identified for detailed area mapping and surveillance. The student teams drawn from inter disciplinary engineering departments of Delhi College of Engg., were supervised by Dr. D.S.Nagesh, Prof. M.Kulkarni. and Prof.Asok De.
